Bangladesh’s capital market is mainly covered with equities with an approximate market capitalization of $46 billion (2020). There are 604 securities are listed in the country’s two stock exchanges of which 336 are equities, 221 are treasury bonds, 10 are corporate bonds & debentures and 37 are closed-end mutual funds. Bangladesh’s capital market is one of the smallest in Asia but the third-largest in the south Asia region. It has two full-fledged automated stock exchanges namely Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE). The Bangladesh Securities & Exchange Commission is the regulatory body of the Bangladesh capital market and the Central Depository Bangladesh Limited (CDBL) is the custodian of the securities traded in the stock exchanges. The capital market of Bangladesh has good growth prospects for its growing size, robust macroeconomic outlook, and ongoing reform activities led by the regulatory body and the stock exchanges. The current market capitalization as a percentage of nominal GDP accounts for approximately 13 percent which remains very lower compared to other neighboring countries like India and Pakistan. It is expected that Bangladesh’s capital market will foster its contribution to the development of the country in the coming years.
